LIFE SKILLS LEARNED

Students participating in the NSTI program will be encouraged to apply engineering principles to strengthen their capabilities and understanding of mathematics, science, reading, writing and leadership. Thus, the summer experience will be far more valuable than coursework familiarity. Ultimately it will allow students to become well-rounded individuals to excel in the STEM and transportation industry fields.

DIVERSITY

The University of Miami recognizes that this country must tend to the educational system and promote the participation of underrepresented groups within the STEM fields. U.S. News concluded that historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups account for 26% of the general population, while they only accounted for 10% of the country’s science and engineering workers. The University of Miami is hosting the NSTI program in this 2015 fiscal year to encourage the younger underrepresented generations into the STEM disciplines.

The Florida Department of Transportation's (FDOT or Department) primary responsibility is to coordinate the planning and development of a safe, viable, and balanced state transportation system serving all regions of the state.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is responsible for ensuring that America's roads, bridges and highways continue to be among the safest and most technologically sound in the world.

UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI RESOURCES

The University of Miami has several resources to engage the students in hands-on activities. The NSTI program at the University of Miami will make use of the College of Engineering facilities. The Structures and Materials Laboratory, is a state-of-the-art facility to help the students understand construction materials and systems. In the lab, students will be able to mix concrete, cast concrete cylinders and test them for compressive strength. The Structure and Materials Laboratory will be beneficial to the students’ understanding of construction materials. Advanced Microscopy Center at the University of Miami provides an opportunity for the participants to look at very small particles found in the construction materials. The Program Director has extensive expertise on nanotechnology in the transportation industry, and will design and perform laboratory hands-on activities suitable for and appealing to the participants.
